An Essay on Modernism vs. Traditionalism in The Mayor of Casterbridge During the first half of the 19th century English society was making the difficult transition from a pre-industrial Britain to ââ¬Ëmodern Victorian times. In agriculture, most of the transition took place around 1846 with the repeal of the corn laws. This allowed foreign grain to be imported into England for the first time. Consequently, the entire structure and methods of agriculture in Britain were greatly altered. Much of the action in Thomas Hardys novel The Mayor of Casterbridge takes place during the years surrounding 1846. These were the years in which traditionalists took their last stand before being defeated in the name of progress. Henchard, being an older man, is not as skilled at penmanship or mathematics and as a result his bookkeeping skills represent an older and more traditional method of maintaining business accounts. Farfrae, being from a younger generation approaches business in a more modern way. He keeps the financial records as accurate and as up to date as possible, making sure to go through old records and correct any mistakes that Henchard had made previously. Henchards methods of business represent skills that are no longer in continual use. Farfrae is an example of how the advance of technology causes the loss of traditional, and valuable skills. In the same way, the conflict between traditional and modern approaches to business is demonstrated through Henchard and Farfraes contrasting perspectives on how to manage employees. Henchard, the traditionalist, takes a stern approach when reprimanding employees, instilling respect into his employees through fear. South Koreas Capital City of Seoul
Seoul is the capital and largest city inà South Korea. Its considered a megacity because it has a population of over ten million people, with nearly half of its 10,208,302 people residing in the National Capital Area (which also includes Incheon and Gyeonggi). Seoul, South Korea The Seoul National Capital Area is the second-largest in the world at 233.7 square miles and an average elevation of just above sea level at 282 feet. Because of its very large population, Seoul is considered a global city and it is the center of South Koreas economy, culture, and politics. Throughout its history, Seoul was known by a number of different names, and the name Seoul itself is believed to have originated from the Korean word for the capital city, Seoraneol. The name Seoul is interesting, however, because it has no matching Chinese characters. Instead, a Chinese name for the city, which sounds similar, has recently been chosen. GoranQ/Getty Images History of Settlement and Independence Seoul has been continuously settled for over 2,000 years since it was first founded in 18 B.C. by the Baekje, one of the Three Kingdoms of Korea. The city also remained as the capital of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty and the Korean Empire. During the Japanese colonization of Korea in the early 20th century, Seoul became known as Gyeongseong. In 1945, Korea gained its independence from Japan and the city was renamed Seoul. In 1949, the city separated from Gyeonggi Province and it became a special city, but in 1950, North Korean troops occupied the city during the Korean War and the entire city was nearly destroyed. On March 14, 1951, theà United Nations forces took control of Seoul. Since then, the city has rebuilt and grown considerably. Today, Seoul is still considered a special city, or a direct-controlled municipality, in that it as a city has a status equal to that of a province. This means that it has no provincial government controlling it. Rather, the federal government of South Korea controls it directly. Because of its very long history of settlement, Seoul is home to a number of historic sites and monuments. The Seoul National Capital Area has fourà UNESCOà World Heritage Sites: theà Changdeokgung Palace Complex, theà Hwaseong Fortress, theà Jongmyo Shrine,à and theà Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty. The city of Seoul itself has an area of 233.7 square miles and is cut in half by the Han River, which was previously used as a trade route to China and helped the city grow throughout its history. The Han River is no longer used for navigation because its estuary is at the border between North and South Korea. Seoul is surrounded by several mountains but the city itself is relatively flat because it is on the Han River plain, and the average elevation of Seoul is 282 feet (86 m). Due to its very large population and relatively small area, Seoul is known for itsà population densityà which is about 44,776 people per square mile. As such, much of the city consists of denseà high-riseà apartment buildings. Mostly all of Seouls residents are of Korean descent, although there are some small groups of Chinese and Japanese. Theà climateà of Seoul is considered both humid subtropical and humid continental (the city lies on the border of these). Summers are hot and humid and the East Asian monsoon has a strong impact on Seouls weather from June to July. Winters are usually cold and dry, although the city gets an average of 28 days of snow per year. The average January low temperature for Seoul is 21 degrees F (-6 degrees C) and the average August high temperature is 85 degrees F (29.5 degrees C). Politics and Economy As one of the largest cities in the world and a leading global city, Seoul has become the headquarters for many international companies. Currently, it is the headquarters of companies like Samsung, LG, Hyundai, and Kia. It also generates over 20% of South Koreas gross domestic product. In addition to its large multinational companies, Seouls economy is focused on tourism, building, and manufacturing. The city is also known for its shopping and the Dongdaemun Market, which is the largest market in South Korea. Seoul is divided into 25 administrative divisions called gu. Each gu has its own government and each is divided into several neighborhoods called a dong. Each gu in Seoul varies in both size and population. Songpa has the largest population, while Seocho is the gu with the largest area in Seoul.

Description And Description Of Internship Experience
Description of Internship Experience Helping to make December 1 headcount and continue EC compliance has continued to occupy a significant part of my internship experience. There have been some issues with getting a few IEPââ¬â¢s closed out in our EC operating system, CECAS because the speech therapist assigned to our school has not entered speech goals in a timely manner. It is a difficult position to explain to a parent why a child has not been receiving services or has not been given speech goals when the therapist is well aware of her caseload. At the same time, I recognize and empathize with her caseload size and the amount of traveling she does daily seeing students at 3 or 4 schools throughout the county. After a number of email reminders and some intervention on the part of an administrator, the goals are entered and there is service being delivered to the students in need. Again, one of the most awkward situations to be in is asking someone to do their job when they do no t work for you. This situation also carried over into mentoring as both new EC teachers were awaiting goals and feedback from the speech therapist. My younger mentee lacked the experience in how to approach the situation. I encouraged her to approach the speech therapist first and we discussed the way to ask via email. Flexible work hours is an alternative work schedule that allows a fulltime employee to eliminate at least one work day every two weeks by working longer hours during the remaining days. The two most popular flexible work schedules are working four 10 hour days and the fifth day off or 80 hours in nine days with the tenth day off. Other schedules include seven days in two weeks and three days a week (Flexible Work Hours Policy Guidelines, 2007). Flexible work schedule is a policy that a company has endorsed so the employee can turn to when something happens in life and the employee needs to change their schedule without quitting or being fired. Employees are considered the backbone of a company and the employees should have the right to pick a schedule that coincides with their lives. The review of statutory employment rights in 21 high-income countries including the United States which shows little improvement for workers. Although there has been progress United States sill lacks the flexibility in the work place. Of 21 countries reviewed, the report found that 17 countries have statutes that allow parents to move to part-time work or otherwise adjust their working hours; 12 have statutes to help workers adjust work hours for training and education; 11 allow reduced hours with partial pension prior to full retirement; 5 allow working time adjustments for those with family care-giving responsibilities for adults; and 5 countries give everyone the right to alternative work arrangements (Crum 2008). Most of these countries are encouraging regulations for family first, old age and lifelong learning. Flexible Work Arrangements 4 In the past 30 years in the U. S. medium age of workers has increased from about 35 years to 41 years as the rate of growth in the labor force has declined (from a rate of 2. 6 percent in the 1970s to the current rate of 1 percent)( Hardy, 2008). The 21 countries surveyed were Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States (Crum 2008). Women in the U. S. workforce make up almost fifty percent today with dependent children then they were in the 1970s. In the past few years, Democratic presidential nominee contenders Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton have voiced their support for legislation allowing flexible work hours. Both Republicans and Democrats have introduced bills on the issue. In December 2008, Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, and Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-New York, introduced the Working Family Flexibility Act, which would grant employees ââ¬Å"the right to requestâ⬠reduced hours or an alternate work schedule (Marquez 2008). Flexible Work Arrangements 6 The Family Flexibility Act bill passes employers will be able to discuss procedures to address employee issues of flexibility. The legislation is in the hands of our grateful hardworking Senators who represent the United States workers. This bill was Introduced in House on March 3, 2009 in the Library of Congress listed, Working Families Flexibility Act H. R. 1274 (Thomas 2009). The Working Families Flexibility Act gives employees the right to request flexible work options. Senator Kennedy said, ââ¬Å"Our working families deserve a 21st century answer for these 21st century job challenges. Greater flexibility is an essential part of the response. More than 80% of workers would like more flexibility in their jobs (Maloney 2007). Under this legislation: -An employee may request to modify his or her hours, schedule, or work location. -Employees and employers will engage in an interactive process to discuss the employeeââ¬â¢s needs and how to address them with no or minimal disruption to the employerââ¬â¢s business. -Employers who deny a request must explain the grounds for the denial. -Employees who make requests are protected from retaliation. Small businesses are exempt from the law. The Department of Labor will develop regulations to smoothly administer the process, while ensuring the protection of employeesââ¬â¢ legal rights (Maloney 2007). Flexible Work Arrangements 7 To help foster flexible workplaces within his own Administration, the President signed the Telework Enhancement Act in December of 2010. The law requires federal agencies to take a number of steps to promote the use of telework, which has become an integral part of achieving workplace flexibility, by allowing individuals to spend part of their week working from home (Jarret 2010). President Obama, on the creation of the White House Council on Women and Girls ââ¬Å"Issues like equal pay, family leave, child care and others are not just womenââ¬â¢s issues; they are family issues and economic issues. So, in an organization, transformational leaders can render increased success to the organization by giving value to the members. An instance that can be referred to here is that of Sam Walton, the founder of Wal-Mart. He often visited the stores of Wal-Mart across the nation to meet with every organizational employee and deliver them appreciation for their contribution towards the company (Chiu, 2010). Four different factors exist in transformational leadership, namely inspirational motivation, idealized influence, individual consideration, and intellectual stimulation. Inspiration motivation refers to managers who encourage members to commit towards organizational vision. Managers having inspirational motivation are said to encourage team spirit for achieving goals of enhanced profit and market growth for the organization. Idealized influence refers to the managers who act as influential role models for the members. Such managers can be highly trusted and respected by the organizational members to make effective organizational decisions (Chreim, 2014). Individual consideration refers to the managers who are like advisors to the team members. They motivate members for achieving objectives that are beneficial for both members and that of organizations. Intellectual stimulation refers to the managers who seek innovation as well as creativity by challenging the usual beliefs of the team members. These managers encourage critical thinking as well as problem solving within workplace(Clarke, 2011). Effective style of transformational leadership leads to performances which exceed all expectations of the organization. All the four factors of transformational leadership as mentioned above result in performance beyond expectation. When managers act as strong role models, innovators, motivators, and advisors, they are said to utilize all the above factors to enable transformation of their associates into increasingly successful members (Tan et al., 2013). Compare Contrast: Transformational leadership may be contrasted with other leadership styles like transactional style as well as autocratic style. It emphasizes upon the responsibilities of organization, supervision and group contribution. Here, the leader encourages his members by means of rewards as well as penalties. It has a negative impact in a way that when leaders punish members for undesirable performances, it leads to adverse mental influences, and often leads to negative outcomes. On the other hand, autocratic leadership refers to the dictating policies of leader who decides upon goals to be achieved, including to that of controlling as well as directing activities without effective participation of employees. Transformational leaders must possess the following attributes: The managers empower members to do what is best suited for the organization They are potential role models with high values They listen to every perspective for developing the spirit of cooperation The managers create vision with the help of the organizational people (Holly and Igwee, 2011) The managers act as change agent to set example in initiating and implementing changes Transformational managers support the organization by helping members From the business world, instances can be cited that reflect upon the most desired or practices form of leadership style. Bill Gates is regarded most in the world of business and ranks one of the top ten business leaders of the globe. He was known to be highly demanding as well as bit abrasive as a boss and promoted creativity as well as innovation. He recognized individual as well as team achievement(Iszatt-White, 2009). Bill gates exhibited more than one type of leadership, most transformational and authoritarian. Authoritarian leaders prefer keeping the control. He demanded so much of control that he even signed off the expense of Steve Ballmer who stood second in command. Authoritarian leadership is effective in cases of emergencies where quick decisions are required. Hence, major success of Bill Gates can be attributed to the quick-decision making quality(Pinnington, 2011). One worth mentioning is that as per the researches it has been identified that Bill Gates who is most respected in the world of business is a transformational leader. He believed in the idea of innovation as well as creativity, along with thorough motivation of his fellow team members. He encouraged them at a great level and ensured that his organization was directed as per the strategic objectives that were determined by him. Reflective Report From the assignment report on leadership style, I feel I have acquired ample amount of knowledge regarding the subject area. From the study I opine that an effective leader usually satisfies two key areas: potential personality as well as knowledgeable or experienced. I learn that a business firm may adopt any leadership style at any point of time depending upon the situational demands. No single leadership style is perfect for every organization. So, in future I would never judge a leader as per his leadership style; rather I would consider the business environment he works around. It is quite clear to me that a true test of leadership as well as that of a leader is their capability to attain their followers. Leaders may provide vision to followers but the need to convince others rather than just telling is much more important and essential. The concept of followership did highlight to me that I may possess best ideas, charisma and determination, but these would not help me if I lac k followership. While undertaking the assignment on leadership style in organizations, I came across various important and essential information and knowledge about leadership style. I learnt that transformational leadership cannot take place in absence of positive followership as well as a transformational leader thoroughly motivates his followers to execute more than is expected to do. The key aspects that resonated with me all throughout are ethics, authentic and transformational leadership, and followership. It is quite clear to me that a leader who emphasizes on these aspects would be able to bring about significant changes and also be an effective, respected and creative leader within the organization. I totally agree to the knowledge that innovative leadership requires to embody authenticity whereby values are expressed as well as embraced by their followers and ethical decisions are completely based on the creative thinking, autonomy and consequences, rather than solutions t hat are short-term. I learn that organizational structure and culture play crucial role in the determination of leadership style to be incorporated by any firm. When business firms are analyzed, it is identified that all major successful firms practice transformational leadership style as evidenced by the most famous entrepreneur, Bill Gates. Reflection upon the practices of this great leader, it taught me that it is not just enough to possess best ideas and creativity. It is also important to acquire and manage followers in the best way possible. This would enhance the role and controlling power of a leader. I have learnt that with my personal experiences, I need to gain authenticity. When I lead my own role, I would focus on staying true to my own values. All the learning and information that I acquired from the study would be of immense help to me in future if I utilize the information in my own practical field. When such situations would arise where I need to exhibit my leadersh ip qualities, I would make sure that I pay enough attention to the need to develop followers before practicing any of the leadership styles.
